How are you doing, fancy cosplayers?
Today we introduce you to one of our first featured members, Carlos Sakata! He’s been in the group for quite a while and we’ve always loved his work. It’s time to know a bit more about him and expose his work to the world.
About Carlos-Sakata
KWC: Introduce yourself. How old are you, where do you live, and what do you do? Carlos-Sakata Hello! I'm Carlos, my nick is Sakata, I’m 21 years old, I live in Madrid (Spain), and I am currently studying Web Application Development (Computing).
KWC: Do you have any other hobbies besides cosplaying?
Carlos-Sakata I’m really very single-minded, haha. My main hobbies are focused around manga and anime and everything around them.
KWC: What is your favorite game/manga/anime/comic/movie?
Carlos-Sakata My favorite anime/manga is definitely Gintama, is a very special series for me. Among my favorites are also Code Geass, Mawaru Penguindrum and Full Metal Alchemist, among others.
As for games, I don’t usually play videogames a lot, but lately I've played quite the new Fire Emblem Awakening of Nintendo 3DS and it has become one of my favorite games, and I'm thinking some cosplays, haha. I also quite like Ace Attorney games and since childhood I've been a big fan of Nintendo.</b>
KWC: Which are your favorite characters?
Carlos-Sakata Lelouch Lamperouge, from Code Geass, clearly. I love that kind of character and him especially. Sakata Gintoki is very dear to me too.
KWC: Do you have some favourite cosplayers or a role model?
Carlos-Sakata Yes, I think that a role model is something that everyone has, haha. In my case, I admire especially a cosplayer from Singapore called Viospace who has a lot of cosplays from Gintama and Kuroko no Basket. I admire other Asian cosplayers like Jesuke, StaReiPolaris and Athensis.
Other international cosplayers that I admire are Calssara and Green-Makakas. I have a lot of favorite cosplayers, haha.
ABOUT COSPLAYING
KWC: How did the interest in cosplay came together for you?
Carlos-Sakata Well, really all started when some friends told me they wanted to make a cosplay group for a convention (I had never gone to one), so I decided to go with them. The group was about Naruto, and I was Kankurô of the Sand, and I made the cosplay with things I found at home, like the most first cosplays of everyone, haha.
KWC: What does cosplay mean to you?
Carlos-Sakata The cosplay means to me, besides a hobby for fun, of course, a way to overcome myself. Maybe there are people who take it like a competition, but for me the only competition I have is with myself. Investigate materials to make new things that you haven´t done before, how to make a piece of the costume, etc.. It’s also a great way to meet people with similar tastes.
KWC: When did you start cosplaying and what was your first cosplay?
Carlos-Sakata I started cosplaying on October of 2007, with a Kankurô Cosplay (Naruto), but I started to cosplay seriously on 2011, when I started to sew my own cosplays.
KWC: Do you make or buy your cosplays?
Carlos-Sakata Since 2 years ago I make them myself. I started like many people, ordering them to a seamstress, until I decided to learn a bit how to do everything myself in 2011, and since then I make everything.
KWC: Which cosplay was your favorite?
Carlos-Sakata I really enjoyed making the Lelouch cosplay from Nunnally In Wonderland and the Gakupo cosplay from the Sandplay song , and the result too. I also like the result of my cosplay of Sakura, Gate 7.
KWC: Least favorite cosplay? Why?
Carlos-Sakata I don’t like just nothing my Ronove cosplay from Umineko no Naku Koro Ni. It was one of the first cosplays I did and he didn’t satisfy me much.
KWC: Do you prefer cosplay or crossplay? Why?
Carlos-Sakata I prefer cosplay, of course, because at the moment I haven’t done crossplay yet. It’s not something to discard in the future, even if a male character dressed like a woman, but at the moment there isn’t in my short-term projects.
KWC: How do you choose a character to cosplay?
Carlos-SakataI usually choose my favorite characters of each series to do cosplay, although sometimes it’s not so for personality or physical, if is the character is very different from me, even though many times this doesn´t matter because I really like the character.
KWC: What is the hardest part when you are starting a new cosplay?
Carlos-Sakata Patterns, specially. Although it also is a bit difficult to choose the right fabrics.
KWC: Do you cosplay alone or with friends?
Carlos-Sakata Sometimes I have individual projects, and sometimes with friends. I enjoyed more doing cosplay with more people, and in fact I would like to have a cosplay pair with which start to do performances to participate in contests, but no luck so far.
KWC: On what occasions do you cosplay?
Carlos-Sakata I usually go to all the conventions that are organized in Madrid with cosplay, but also usually have photoshoots some days that we want.
KWC: What do your family and friends think about cosplay? Do they like it?
Carlos-Sakata My parents often think I'm crazy, and cosplay is a waste of money and time, but… I don´t know, I comfort myself thinking that at the bottom it seems good to them and when I do a nice outfit they feel a little proud that I have managed to do that. My grandparents and some more distant relative think that is all right to do this, that is an interesting hobby and sometimes ask me to show them my photos.
And about my friends ... Almost all my friends are cosplayers, so it is clear what they think, haha.
KWC: What's your opinion on the cosplay community in your country?
Carlos-Sakata Mostly, among cosplayers usually have good cheer and friendship, but as in all communities there is always some mess and people wanting to annoy. Luckily I've only had a couple of problems at the moment, but isn´t more than mere attempts to disturb.
About the level, there are very good cosplayers, and people to learn from.
KWC: What are your next cosplays?
Carlos-Sakata Right now in my spare time I'm doing a simple cosplay, the NASA uniform of Nanba Mutta, from Uchuu Kyoudai, which is a anime that I love and hardly there are cosplayers of it worldwide. In summer I’m going to do a few projects that I really want to do, like Sinbad (Magi) and Chrom (Fire Emblem Awakening). I would like to try new materials for cosplay and learn for future projects. I also would like to do something new from Gintama, like Kyuubei male form from the Genderbender Arc. And perhaps I will do some other project, summer is very long, but even I have to think it.
